Sahara Corridors — Pass, Draa, Erg Chebbi & Chigaga

Each erg and kasbah road has its own kilometre count. Times are one-way in fair weather. A single OZZ–hotel drop is Ouarzazate Transfer. A Marrakech palace morning is Marrakech Tours.

Marrakech to Ouarzazate via Tizi n’Tichka

The usual Sahara gate from the north is the N9 over Tizi n’Tichka — about 190–210 km, typically 4 hours to 4 hours 45 minutes, longer with snow, coaches, or photo stops. This is a mountain pass day, not a 25-minute Menara hop. You can treat it as day one of a desert itinerary (sleep in Ouarzazate or Aït Ben Haddou) or as the inbound on Ouarzazate Transfer if you only need the A-to-B.

  • RAK or Marrakech hotel → Ouarzazate · ~200 km · 4h–4h 45min
  • Aït Ben Haddou is about 30 km before / beside town · 30–45 min from OZZ
  • Ksar drop-off at the parking edge; the last stretch is on foot
  • Same-day return to Marrakech is a long, tired drive — better as Marrakech Tours only if you accept a short ksar stop

Ouarzazate, Kasbahs & Film Studio Circuit

Once you are over the pass, Atlas Studios, CLA, Kasbah Taourirt, and town hotels are short hops — often 10–25 minutes. A half-day in Ouarzazate with waiting is a Sahara-gate city circuit, not Erg Chebbi. Name the studio gate so the driver is not sent to the kasbah car park.

Draa Valley & Zagora

South from Ouarzazate the road follows the Draa toward Zagora — about 150–170 km, typically 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes. Palmeraies and ksars sit off the main road; agree an accessible village point. Zagora is a desert-edge town, not the 150-metre dunes of Erg Chebbi. Many overnight camps that say “Sahara” near Zagora are closer to the Draa than to Merzouga — name the camp.

Merzouga & Erg Chebbi

Erg Chebbi is the tall dune field by Merzouga, far east of Ouarzazate. Ouarzazate → Merzouga is about 350–380 km and typically 5 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours. Marrakech → Merzouga is about 540–580 km and typically 9–11 hours — a travel day, not a sightseeing loop you reverse the same evening. Camps sit at the dune edge: the car goes to the camp meeting point; camel or 4x4 into the erg is usually arranged by the camp, not included in the chauffeur quote unless we say so.

  • Ouarzazate → Merzouga · ~350–380 km · 5h 30min–7h
  • Marrakech → Merzouga · ~540–580 km · 9–11h one way
  • Camp parking / meeting point — not a pin on the dune crest
  • Overnight is the honest product; a same-day Marrakech return is not sold as a ‘highlights’ six-hour tour

Erg Chigaga via M’Hamid

Erg Chigaga is a different dune sea, reached via Zagora and M’Hamid el Ghizlane, then a piste. The last stretch is often a 4x4, not a saloon. Ouarzazate → M’Hamid is already a long sealed-road day (Zagora plus another 90–100 km, often 4–5 hours combined). We will not quote a city car to the crest of Chigaga. Name the camp; if a 4x4 transfer from M’Hamid is required, that is specified before you confirm.

  • Different erg from Merzouga / Chebbi — do not reuse those times
  • Sealed road to M’Hamid; piste beyond
  • Saloon or minivan to the agreed village or camp gate only
  • 4x4 last kilometres when the camp requires them

Multi-Day vs Point-to-Point

A Sahara tour is usually two or three road days with hotel or camp nights in between. Day 1: RAK or OZZ to Ouarzazate / Aït Ben Haddou. Day 2: Draa or the long haul to Merzouga. Day 3: dunes at sunrise, then reverse or fly from OZZ if a seat exists. Each day is a quoted block. A one-drop Ouarzazate Transfer or a Marrakech Tours Agafay evening is a different product — Agafay is 45–75 minutes from Gueliz, not the Sahara.

  • Ask for a multi-day outline: hours per day, overnight towns, camp name
  • Camp lodging, camel rides, and sand-boarding are usually paid to the camp

How a Sahara Tour Is Timed — Pass First, Dunes Second

Guests who book “a Sahara day from Marrakech” often mean Agafay, Aït Ben Haddou, or a real erg. Those are three products. Agafay is a Marrakech afternoon. Aït Ben Haddou is a High Atlas / Ouarzazate day. Erg Chebbi is an overnight east of Rissani. This page exists so we do not sell Merzouga with Ourika timings.

You can start at Marrakech Menara (RAK) or Ouarzazate (OZZ). RAK starts include meet-and-greet, flight monitoring, and 45 minutes waiting after landing, then you still have a four-hour pass ahead — a late afternoon landing is a poor start for Tichka. OZZ is 10–20 minutes from town: a kasbah half-day the same morning is realistic; Merzouga the same afternoon is only possible with an early landing and a long evening arrival at camp.

Airport rules match our other chauffeur products. Camp and ksar access is desert-specific.

  • RAK or OZZ: arrivals hall, name sign, flight monitoring, 45 minutes waiting after landing, then the reserved road block
  • Aït Ben Haddou: parking / village edge, then on foot across the riverbed or bridge
  • Desert camp: named meeting point or parking — not a GPS pin on the dune
  • Standard car for two with overnight bags; minivan for families — a 9-hour Merzouga day is not a city saloon with ski bags stacked to the roof

No. Agafay is a stone desert about 30–45 km from Marrakech (typically 45–75 minutes). Book Marrakech Tours for Agafay. This page is for the High Atlas pass, the Draa, Erg Chebbi, and Erg Chigaga.

We do not sell that as a sightseeing product. One way is about 540–580 km and 9–11 hours. You would see headlights, not dunes. Plan at least one night at the erg, or fly into OZZ and continue from Ouarzazate (still 5.5–7 hours to Merzouga).

In the arrivals hall at RAK or OZZ, with a name sign. We monitor the flight number. The first 45 minutes of waiting after landing are included. Then the reserved road hours apply. OZZ–town is 10–20 minutes; RAK–Tichka is a four-hour pass after that waiting.

Zagora: about 160 km, typically 2h 30min–3h 15min. Merzouga / Erg Chebbi: about 350–380 km, typically 5h 30min–7h. Erg Chigaga is a different road via M’Hamid and often a 4x4 finish.
